TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible under specific conditions. Heating will cause rise in pressure with risk of bursting. See Notes. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: use appropriate extinguishing media.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS!

 •INHALATION Headache. Dizziness. Drowsiness. Nausea. Ataxia. Unconsciousness.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN Dry skin. Redness.
Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
 •EYES Redness.
Safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION Diarrhoea. Nausea. Vomiting. (Further see Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Ventilation. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable, suitable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Personal protection: self-contained breathing apparatus.
Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from food and feedstuffs and incompatible materials . See Chemical Dangers. Cool. Dry. Ventilation along the floor.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating or on burning producing toxic and corrosive fumes including phosgene and hydrogen chloride. Reacts violently with aluminium, manganese and their alloys, alkalis, strong oxidants, acetone and zinc. Attacks natural rubber. Mixtures of 1,1,1-trichloroethane with potassium or its alloys are shock sensitive. Reacts slowly with water releasing corrosive hydrochloric acid.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is irritating to the eyes , the skin and the respiratory tract . The substance may cause effects on the heart, central nervous system and liver , resulting in cardiac disorders and respiratory failure . Exposure at high levels may result in death. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
The liquid defats the skin. The substance may have effects on the liver.

The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms. This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to air quality and ground water contamination.
N O T E S
Combustible vapour/air mixtures difficult to ignite, may be developed under certain conditions. The substance burns only in excess oxygen or if a strong source of ignition is present. Use of alcoholic beverages enhances the harmful effect. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. An added stabilizer or inhibitor can influence the toxicological properties of this substance, consult an expert. Do NOT use in the vicinity of a fire or a hot surface, or during welding. Aerothene, Algylen, Trichloran, Chlorylen, Genklene, Chlorothene NU, Chlorothene VG, and Solvent 111 are trade names. Card has been partly updated in April 2005.
