TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion. Heating will cause rise in pressure with risk of bursting.
NO contact with flammable substances.
In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed.
EXPLOSION Risk of fire and explosion on contact with combustible substances, reducing agents, metals and aqueous ammonia.

In case of fire: keep cylinder cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS! AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
 •INHALATION Cough. Wheezing. Laboured breathing. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Closed system and ventilation.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN Skin burns. Pain. Symptoms may be delayed.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention.
 •EYES Causes watering of the eyes. Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns.
Safety goggles, and face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION Abdominal pain. Burning sensation. Shock or collapse.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Ventilation. Collect leaking liquid in sealable plastic containers. Absorb remaining liquid in dry sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. Gas-tight chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus.
Separated from combustible and reducing substances, metals , organics , food and feedstuffs . Cool. Dry. Well closed. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Special material. Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
FUMING RED TO BROWN LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
Upon heating, toxic fumes are formed. The substance is a strong oxidant and reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials. Reacts violently with aqueous ammonia , metals , organic compounds and phosphorus causing fire and explosion hazard. Attacks some forms of plasticrubber and coatings.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.1 ppm as TWA; 0.2 ppm as STEL; (ACGIH 2004).
EU OEL: 0.1 ppm, 0.7 mg/m³ as TWA; (EU 2004).
OSHA PEL: TWA 0.1 ppm (0.7 mg/m3)
NIOSH REL: TWA 0.1 ppm (0.7 mg/m3) ST 0.3 ppm (2 mg/m3)
NIOSH IDLH: 3 ppm


ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Lachrymation. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the vapour may cause asthma-like reactions (RADS). Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Exposure may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated. Corrosive on ingestion.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged inhalation exposure may cause asthma-like syndrome (RADS).

N O T E S
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Thiosulphate has been used to neutralize spills.
