FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed.

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
 •INHALATION Cough. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Closed system and ventilation.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN Redness.
Protective gloves.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
 •EYES Redness. Pain.
Safety goggles, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection if powder.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION Abdominal cramps. Diarrhoea. Nausea. Vomiting.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Vacuum spilled material. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. (Extra personal protection: P3 filter respirator for toxic particles).
Separated from acids, food and feedstuffs, magnesium.
Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.
Severe marine pollutant.

ODOURLESS, BROWN CRYSTALS OR AMORPHOUS POWDER.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic fumes of cadmium. Reacts violently with magnesium when heated causing fire and explosion hazard.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.01 mg/m3 (as TWA) (as Cd); total dust A2 (ACGIH 1993-1994).
TLV (as TWA): 0.002 mg/m3 (as Cd); respirable dust A2 (ACGIH 1993-1994).
NIOSH REL: Ca See Appendix A *Note: The REL applies to all Cadmium compounds (as Cd).
NIOSH IDLH: Potential occupational carcinogen 9 mg/m3 (as Cd)


ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the aerosol may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Exposure far above OEL may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolonged exposure. The substance may have effects on the kidneys and lungs , resulting in kidney impairment and tissue lesions. This substance is probably carcinogenic to humans. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes toxic effects upon human reproduction.

In the food chain important to humans, bioaccumulation takes place, specifically in plants and seafood. It is strongly advised not to let the chemical enter into the environment because it persists in the environment.
N O T E S
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. Do NOT take working clothes home.
