TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Extremely flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking.
Shut off supply; if not possible and no risk to surroundings, let the fire burn itself out; in other cases extinguish with powder, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Gas/air mixtures are explosive.
Closed system, ventilation, explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. Use non-sparking handtools.
In case of fire: keep cylinder cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.
EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE!

 •INHALATION Burning sensation. Cough. Headache. Sore throat. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN ON CONTACT WITH LIQUID: FROSTBITE.
Cold-insulating gloves. Protective clothing.
ON FROSTBITE: rinse with plenty of water, do NOT remove clothes. Refer for medical attention.
 •EYES Redness. Pain. Blurred vision.
Safety goggles, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Ventilation. Remove all ignition sources. NEVER direct water jet on liquid. Remove vapour with fine water spray. (Extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.)

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS COMPRESSED LIQUEFIED GAS , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The gas is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides . The solution in water is a strong base, it reacts violently with acid and is corrosive. Reacts violently with oxidants, ethylene oxide. Attacks metal such as copper, zinc, aluminium, tin, and their alloys.

TLV: 5 ppm( as TWA); 15 ppm( as STEL); (ACGIH 2002).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation.

INHALATION RISK:
On loss of containment, a harmful concentration of this gas in the air will be reached very quickly.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is severely irritating to the eyes and the respiratory tract . Rapid evaporation of the liquid may cause frostbite. Inhalation of the substance may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

N O T E S
Turn leaking cylinder with the leak up to prevent escape of gas in liquid state. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. MAK value not established but full documentation is available (MAK IIb).
