FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking.
Alcohol-resistant foam, powder, carbon dioxide (see Notes).
EXPLOSION Above 49°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 49°C use a closed system, ventilation, and explosion-proof electrical equipment.
In case of fire: cool drums, etc., by spraying with water but avoid contact of the substance with water.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
 •INHALATION Corrosive. Cough. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN Corrosive. Redness. Pain. Blisters.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
 •EYES Corrosive. Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns.
Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION Corrosive. Abdominal pain. Sore throat. Collapse.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Consult an expert! Ventilation. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. (Extra personal protection: self-contained breathing apparatus).
Fireproof. Separated from food and feedstuffs, incompatible substances (see Chemical Dangers). Dry.
Airtight. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

COLOURLESS, VERY MOBILE LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic fumes and gases including acetic acid. Reacts violently with boiling water, steam, strong oxidants, alcohols, amines, strong bases, and many other compounds. Attacks many metals in presence of water. The liquid is very corrosive, especially in presence of water or moisture (further see Notes).

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 5 ppm; 21 mg/m3 (as TWA) (ACGIH 1993-1994).
OSHA PEL: TWA 5 ppm (20 mg/m3)
NIOSH REL: C 5 ppm (20 mg/m3)
NIOSH IDLH: 200 ppm


ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Corrosive. Tear drawing. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.

N O T E S
Forms acetic acid when mixed with water. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered. Major fires must be extingushed with large amounts of water from a distance.
