TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible.
NO open flames.
Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 63°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 63°C use a closed system, ventilation.

EXPOSURE
PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS! AVOID ALL CONTACT!

•INHALATION Sore throat. Cough. Burning sensation. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN Pain. Blisters.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
•EYES Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns.
Face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Burning sensation. Abdominal pain. Shock or collapse. Sore throat.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in dry sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. (Extra personal protection: chemical suit including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Separated from acids, bases, oxidants, food and feedstuffs. Dry. Ventilation along the floor.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on contact with water producing corrosive propionic acid. Reacts violently with acids, bases and oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV not established.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour or its aerosol, and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
No indication can be given about the rate in which a harmful concentration in the air is reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Corrosive. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of vapour or aerosol may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
Boiling point: 167°C
Melting point: -45°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.01
Solubility in water: reaction
Vapour pressure, kPa at 20°C: 100
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 4.5
Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20°C (air = 1): 4.4
Flash point: 63°C
Auto-ignition temperature: 285°C
Explosive limits, vol% in air: 1.3-9.5
ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Immediate administration of an appropriate spray, by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
