TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air.
Prevent deposition of dust; closed system, dust explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.
EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Burning sensation. Blue lips or finger nails. Blue skin. Dizziness. Headache. Nausea. Weakness. Laboured breathing.
Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! (See Inhalation).
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
 •EYES Redness. Pain.
Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION (See Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Consult an expert! Sweep spilled substance into containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus.
Separated from strong oxidants, strong bases, food and feedstuffs. See Chemical Dangers.
Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
YELLOW CRYSTALS

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
May explode on heating, even in absence of air. On combustion, forms toxic gases and fumes including nitrogen oxides. Reacts violently with strong oxidants, strong bases, and reducing metals (tin and zinc), causing fire and explosion hazard. Attacks some plastic andrubber.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.15 ppm as TWA; (skin); (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: skin absorption (H);
Carcinogen category: 3B;
(DFG 2004).
OSHA PEL: TWA 1 mg/m3 skin
NIOSH REL: TWA 1 mg/m3 skin
NIOSH IDLH: 50 mg/m3

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
No indication can be given about the rate in which a harmful concentration in the air is reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is irritating to the eyes and the respiratory tract . The substance may cause effects on the blood , resulting in formation of methaemoglobin. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
The substance may have effects on the blood , resulting in anaemia . The substance may have effects on the liver , resulting in liver impairment. The substance may have effects on the nervous system and may cause impaired vision. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes toxicity to human reproduction or development.

N O T E S
Use of alcoholic beverages enhances the harmful effect. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. See ICSC 0460 (1,2-Dinitrobenzene), 0692 (1,4-Dinitrobenzene), 0725 (Dinitrobenzene, mixed isomers). Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See section Occupational Exposure Limits.
Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-61S1597-S
NFPA Code: H3; F1; R4; for 1,2-Dinitrobenzene.
