TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.

In case of fire in the surroundings: NO water, NO hydrous agents, powder, carbon dioxide, alcohol-resistant foam.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: cool drums, etc., by spraying with water but avoid contact of the substance with water.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Cough. Laboured breathing. Burning sensation. Blue lips or finger nails. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration if indicated. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain. Serious skin burns. Blisters.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Pain. Redness. Blurred vision. Severe deep burns.
Face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Burning sensation. Abdominal pain. Diarrhoea. Shock or collapse.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Give nothing to drink. Refer for medical attention. See Notes.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Cover the spilled material with dry sand. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible, then remove to safe place. NEVER direct water jet on liquid. (Extra personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus).
Separated from food and feedstuffs. See Chemical Dangers. Dry. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Unbreakable packaging; put breakable packaging into closed unbreakable container. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS TO YELLOW LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic and corrosive fumes including phosgene, hydrogen chloride. Reacts violently with water, alcohols, powdered metals and many organics causing toxic, fire and explosion hazard. On contact with air it emits corrosive gas.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.05 ppm; 0.23 mg/m3 (skin) (ACGIH 1997).
TLV (as STEL): 0.15 ppm; 0.69 mg/m3 (ACGIH 1997).
MAK not established.
OSHA PEL: none
NIOSH REL: TWA 0.05 ppm (0.2 mg/m3)
NIOSH IDLH: No data

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and its aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Tear drawing. The substance irritates the eyes and is corrosive to the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of vapour or aerosol may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the cardiovascular system. Exposure far above the OEL may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolonged exposure.
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
Boiling point: 106°C
Melting point: -21.8°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.4
Solubility in water:
reaction
Vapour pressure, kPa at 20°C: 2.5
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 3.9
Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20°C (air = 1): 1.07
ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Do NOT take working clothes home.
