TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion.
NO contact with flammable substances.
Carbon dioxide. Special powder. NO hydrous agents. In case of fire in the surroundings: use no water unless protected against toxic gases.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water but NO direct contact with water.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!
IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
•INHALATION Cough. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Sore throat.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
•SKIN Redness. Skin burns. Pain. Blisters.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
•EYES Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns.
Face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
•INGESTION Abdominal pain. Burning sensation. Shock or collapse.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Ventilation. Collect leaking liquid in sealable containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. NEVER direct water jet on liquid. (Extra personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus.)
Fireproof. Separated from combustible and reducing substances, food and feedstuffs . Dry. Keep in the dark. Keep in a well-ventilated room.
Airtight. Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
DARK RED FUMING LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes violently on contact with water producing toxic and corrosive fumes ( hydrogen chloride , chlorine ,chromium trioxide and chromium trichloride). The substance is a strong oxidant and reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials. Reacts violently with water, non-metal halides, non-metal hydrides, ammonia and certain common solvents such as alcohol, ether, acetone, turpentine, causing fire and explosion hazard. Attacks many metals in presence of water. Incompatible with plastics. Can ignite combustible substances.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.025 ppm as TWA; (ACGIH 2003).
OSHA PEL: none
NIOSH REL: Ca 0.001 mg Cr(VI)/m3 See Appendix A See Appendix C
NIOSH IDLH: Potential occupational carcinogen No data

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour or aerosol and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes).

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. This substance is probably carcinogenic to humans.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA
It is strongly advised that this substance does not enter the environment.
N O T E S
Dissolves chromium trioxide, yielding a powerful oxidant. Reacts violently with fire extinguishing agents such as water. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential. Do NOT take working clothes home. Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water.
