TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames.
Powder, water spray, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
EXPOSURE
STRICT HYGIENE! AVOID EXPOSURE OF (PREGNANT) WOMEN! AVOID EXPOSURE OF ADOLESCENTS AND CHILDREN!

 •INHALATION Laboured breathing. See Ingestion.
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN Pain. Redness.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
 •EYES
Safety goggles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION Nausea. Vomiting.
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Personal protection: A/P2 filter respirator for organic vapour and harmful dust.
Provision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from food and feedstuffs . See Chemical Dangers. Cool. Well closed.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
DARK BROWN LIQUID

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides . The substance is a weak acid. Reacts with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard. May decompose when heated above 32°C.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV not established.

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
No indication can be given about the rate in which a harmful concentration in the air is reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is irritating to the skin .

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes malformations in human babies.
PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES
Boiling point at 0.007kPa: 138-140°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.10
Solubility in water:
none
Vapour pressure, Pa at 20°C: negligible
ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. Avoid release to the environment in circumstances different to normal use.
N O T E S
Incompatible with oil, oil based sprays and lime sulfur mixture. Carrier solvents used in commercial formulations may change physical and toxicological properties. Caprane, Crotothane and Karathane are trade names. Card has been partly updated in October 2004. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response.
