PHYSICAL DANGERS: CHEMICAL DANGERS: Reacts violently with acids , water or moist air to produce phosphine (ICSC 0694), causing fire andtoxic hazard. Reacts violently with strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard. OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS: TLV not established. ROUTES OF EXPOSURE: The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion. INHALATION RISK: A very toxic concentration of airborne particles can be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered. EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE: The substance is irritating to the eyes , the skin and the respiratory tract . Inhalation of phosphine liberated from calcium phosphide may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the gastrointestinal tract , central nervous system , liver , kidneys and cardiovascular system , resulting in impaired functions and respiratory failure .
