TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible.

In case of fire in the surroundings: use appropriate extinguishing media.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE
PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST!

 •INHALATION
Avoid inhalation of fine dust and mist. Local exhaust or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest.
 •SKIN
Protective gloves.
Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap.
 •EYES
Safety spectacles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Sweep spilled substance into covered containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Personal protection: P1 filter respirator for inert particles.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
WHITE POWDER.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV:
(Respirable fraction)
2 mg/m³ as TWA; A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen); (ACGIH 2004).
OSHA PEL: TWA 15 mg/m3 (total) TWA 5 mg/m3 (resp)
NIOSH REL: TWA 10 mg/m3 (total) TWA 5 mg/m3 (resp)
NIOSH IDLH: No data

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol.

INHALATION RISK:
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a nuisance-causing concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly on spraying or when dispersed, especially if powdered.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolonged exposure to dust particles. The substance may have effects on the lungs , resulting in fibrosis (kaolinosis) and impaired functions.
PHYSICAL

Relative density (water = 1): 2.6
Solubility in water: none
ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S
This card applies to kaolin containing <1% crystalline silica. If kaolin contains more than 1% crystalline silica, fusion temperature 1785°C. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. Fitrol, Glomax, Kaophills-2 are trade names. See also ICSC0808 Quartz. Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response.
