TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Explosive. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking. NO contact with base(s), combustibles or reducing agents.
Water in large amounts, water spray.
EXPLOSION

In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.
EXPOSURE
AVOID ALL CONTACT!

•INHALATION Cough. Blue lips or finger nails. Blue skin. Headache. Laboured breathing. Vomiting. Dizziness. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN Redness. Pain.
Protective gloves. Protective clothing.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again.
 •EYES Redness. Pain.
Safety goggles, Face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION (See Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating.
Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Ventilation. Remove all ignition sources. Collect leaking liquid in sealable plastic containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. Personal protection: filter respirator for organic gases and vapours.
Fireproof. Separated from incompatible materials . See Chemical Dangers. Well closed. Keep in a well-ventilated room.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS TO YELLOW OILY LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance is a strong oxidant and reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials. Shock-sensitive compounds are formed with hydrocarbons, cotton, toluene, 1,3-nitrobenzene, 1-nitrotoluene, 4-nitrotoluene, 1-nitronaphthalene, ferrocene, pyridine, sodium ethoxide. May explode on heating. The substance decomposes on heating and on burning producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides . Reacts violently with amines , powdered metals and metals such as aluminium , copper , iron or zinc causing fire and explosion hazard. Attacks rubber.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.005 ppm as TWA; A3; (ACGIH 2004).
MAK:
Carcinogen category: 2
(DFG 2003).

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance is severely irritating to the eyes , the skin and the respiratory tract . Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the blood , resulting in the formation of methaemoglobin. The substance may cause effects on the kidneys , liver and lungs . Medical observation is indicated. The effects may be delayed.

EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
This substance is possibly carcinogenic to humans.

ENVIRONMENTAL
DATA

N O T E S
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available. Environmental effects from the substance have not been investigated adequately. Do NOT take working clothes home. Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water. Tetan and TNM are trade names.
