TYPES OF HAZARD/ EXPOSURE ACUTE HAZARDS/ SYMPTOMS PREVENTION FIRST AID/
FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.
NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking. NO contact with base(s), combustibles and oxidants.
Powder, AFFF, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 28°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed.
Above 28°C use a closed system, ventilation, and explosion-proof electrical equipment.
In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.
EXPOSURE


 •INHALATION Headache. Cough. Dizziness. Shortness of breath. Convulsions. Unconsciousness. Weakness. (See Ingestion).
Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection.
Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
 •SKIN Redness. (See Inhalation).
Protective gloves.
First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
 •EYES Redness.
Safety goggles.
First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
 •INGESTION Abdominal pain. Blue lips or fingernails. Blue skin. Sore throat. (Further see Inhalation).
Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work.
Rinse mouth. Refer for medical attention.
SPILLAGE DISPOSAL STORAGE PACKAGING & LABELLING
Ventilation. Remove all ignition sources. Collect leaking liquid in sealable containers. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents.
Fireproof. Separated from combustible and reducing substances, strong oxidants.

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
OILY COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
May explode on heating rapidly to high temperature. Shock-sensitive compounds are formed with strong inorganic alkalis, acids or combination of amines and heavy metal oxides. The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic fumes (nitrogen oxides). Reacts with bases, combustible substances, oxidants, causing fire and explosion hazard.

TLV: 100 ppm; 307 mg/m3 (as TWA) (ACGIH 1997).
MAK: 100 ppm; 310 mg/m3; (1998)
OSHA PEL: TWA 100 ppm (310 mg/m3)

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air will be reached rather slowly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Tear drawing. The substance irritates the eyes and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the blood , resulting in cyanosis and formation of methaemoglobin. Exposure at high level could cause lowering of consciousness. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

In case of fire, intact vessels only to be approached after complete cool down. Will turn shock-sensitive if contaminated with amines, heavy metals, bases, acids. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated. Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available.
